Dangers of Using AI to Generate Your Logo and Branding

It's cool that AI tools can create logos and build websites, right?

Well, it's cool until you actually try them. We think AI tools can save time when it comes to remedial or supplemental tasks, but here's why you don't want to use them for your logo, branding, or website design.

Problems with Using AI for Graphic Design

We've had some clients make their logos with AI. You can get some decent images. However, here are the issues they've had:

  1. If you like the logo but want some tweaks, like colors or text or graphic adjustments, you're out of luck. AI can't fix your image; it can only regenerate a new one that's different. It's all or nothing.
  2. If you get the logo you want, you can't export it into any usable file types for website or print. Bummer.
  3. You'll never get anything original out of an AI generator. It aggregates; it doesn't create. So your brand may end up looking very similar to someone else's, or Frankenstein's mishmash of a bunch of other brands.

As an example, we created a logo with ChatGPT. We told it that we had a lemonade stand on a country highway in Jackson, WY, and that our mascot was a buffalo. If you'll glance back at the title image, you'll see what we got.

You'll notice straws apparently going in and out of the buffalo. The buffalo is missing a horn, and a piece of the lemon is missing where you'd normally see it inside the glass. Additionally, we're not sure why "Jackson, WY" and "country highway" needed to be in the logo (it's not a poster, after all). Overall, the style itself isn't bad. But unfortunately, if we tried to change any of the errors, we'd only be able to generate a completely different image.

What about AI Websites?

Guess what? An AI tool can generate only one version of your site. You can't make any adjustments; you'll have to regenerate the whole thing. No text changes, no image changes. You're stuck with what you've got. It doesn't know how to make adjustments to fit your brand, whether in copy or imagery.

It may seem cheap and interesting, but it's not worth risking your business on what AI doesn't understand.

Until the robots come for all our jobs and we're relegated to drinking pina coladas on the beach, you can still get human help and ingenuity for branding and websites. And hey, we might be biased, but it's pretty affordable with Matchstick Studio!
